CHATEAU MONTELENA WINERY

(Napa Valley)

Chateau Montelena was founded in 1882 in Napa Valley. In 1976, Chateau Montelena put California at the forefront of the wine world. Pitted against 4 White Burgundies and 5 California Chardonnays, Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay was rated the best by a team of who’s-who of the French wine and food establishment at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Paris.

CHATEAU MONTELENA Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Ripe plum, raspberry, and strawberry jam co-mingle with a touch of vanilla and star anise.  Rich concentration and viscosity punctuated with blueberry and blackberry notes woven into chewy, ripe tannins.  The rich acid backbone ties the palate together and aids the seamless transition into a finish layered with ripe cherries, baking spices, and cocoa.

CHATEAU MONTELENA ESTATE Cabernet Sauvignon

Dense, rich ruby color in the glass, this Estate Cabernet Sauvignon shows complex aromas of dark cherry, dried fruits, earth, cedar, and vanilla cream along with hints of licorice and leather. The palate opens with big, chewy tannin – firm but not coarse – and builds even bigger into a mid-palate loaded with ripe red fruits and dried black fruits. There is a good, strong acid backbone completing the balance and structure. The barrel flavors are well-integrated throughout but are best evident in the warm and spicy finish. Still quite young and powerful, this dense compact wine will open beautifully with time in bottle (or glass).

CHATEAU MONTELENA Chardonnay Napa Valley 2013

Robert Parker – 93 points

"40 years and still running strong, the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay began its history with the 1972 vintage and gained worldwide recognition when the 1973 offering bested a group highly acclaimed Burgundies in a major 1976 blind tasting. Over the years the winery has kept up its focused and consistently produced fine efforts. The 2013 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay is one of the best in the marketplace. Medium straw color; the aromas exhibit ripe apples and a shading of sweet oak; medium bodied, fine and rich on the palate; dry, nice acidity, well balanced; ripe apple and sweet oak in its vibrant flavors.”
